We have got some requests to provide some additional guidance for analyzing the 2018 results. This post hopefully addresses those questions, though you should definitely read the full 2018 Food/Soil Survey Final Report first for context!
The data is downloaded from: https://app.our-sci.net/#/dashboard/by-dashboard-id/bfa-v2 . Specifically, scroll down and download the csv “Soil-Food Combined, Cleaned, useful vars” (full data in CSV) and “Variable names and Descriptions” (description of all of the variables in the CSV).
READ THE “Variable names and Descriptions” – it is pretty complete and explains which data you should be looking for.
Note that for samples collected from farms directly, the farm name and information is not there if you do not have permissions (ie it’s anonymized)… however, you figure out which samples came from the same farm.
Here’s useful variables to help identify samples from the same farm:
If you group by those things, that’ll get you started. If you analyze data using these groups and find groups that seem to be outliers (positive or negative), then you can communicate that back to us and we can try to direct you from there. If needed, we can help you connect to individual farms for follow up information (with permission from the farm, of course).
We don’t have infinite time and money, so we eventually ran out of time analyzing the 2018 data… however, there were many interesting questions remaining. Here are a few things worth following up on:
If you are analyzing our data, we’d love for you to post your analysis here! We make this data public so we can all learn together, and would like to include your analysis here so everyone can see it. Contact us and we’ll figure out how to link you in.
